This is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Cherhill Down, to the south of the A4 between Calne and Avebury is an area of great interest, with the white horse on its northern face, a group of barrows to the south, the Lansdowne Monument on top and Oldbury Castle just behind.
The 'castle' which is an irregularly shaped, well defended iron age hillfort encloses an area of about 25 acres (14.9 hectares) having an inturned entrance to the south-east.
It is defended by sections of single and double rampart and ditch. During the 19th century excavations uncovered iron age pottery, and the site was subject to flint digging.
