Turning north on the Ridgeway along Avebury Down, following the crest of Hackpen Hill, going towards Barbury Castle. Where the Ridgeway crosses a minor road between
Wootton Bassett and Marlborough on Hackpen Hill, you will find an odd-looking white horse measuring 90 feet (27 metres) long and 90 feet high, with short ears, raised tail and a trotting gait.
Henry Eatwell, the parish clerk, carved the horse in 1838 with the assistance of Robert Witt, a local publican. Of all the 19th century white horses, this is the only one
that is supposed to commemorate an event, the coronation of Queen Victoria. It is also known as the Hackpen White Horse.
